What are mental health conditions?
Following on from yesterday’s what is mental health post, today we want to talk about some common mental health conditions.
There are many different mental health conditions and everyone’s experience is different and can change at different times throughout our lives.
In 2019, 1 in every 8 people, or 970 million people around the world were living with a mental disorder, with anxiety and depressive disorders being the most common.
An estimated 1 in 6 adults in the UK (higher than the global average) have experienced a ‘common mental disorder’ like depression or anxiety in the past week and 20% of children aged 8 to 16 had a probable mental disorder in 2023, up from 12% in 2017.
Aside from anxiety disorders and depression, other common mental health conditions include Bipolar Disorder, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Schizophrenia, eating disorders such as anorexia and bulimia and neurodevelopmental disorders.
There are many other mental health conditions, but it is important to know that there are a range of effective treatment exists for some of these conditions.
